Local generation of solitary waves in a pycnocline

Local generation of solitary waves occurs when an upgoing internal wave beam hits a thermocline. Under specific conditions, energy from the internal wave is transferred to the oscillation modes of the pycnoclyne, that further degenerate in train of solitons. This local generation is the only serious candidate to explain the observation of solitary waves far away from any topography.
